Study day: "Sustainable use of pesticides and supply chain services".

The resolution by Puglia Regional Council No 853 of 12th of June 2007, establishing the "Regional Control and Calibration Service of sprayers in use" for the distribution of plant protection products, concludes the long experimental phase begun in 1999, thanks to the financial commitment of the Apulia Region and the operational commitment of the ASSOCODIPUGLIA and the PROGESA Department of the University of Bari.

The recent reference standards EN 13790-1 and EN 13790-2, concerning:
  1. the adaptation of the National and / or Regional Testing Protocols of the 22 participating European Countries;
  2. the documentation prepared by the Technical Working Group for the National Conduct of Control Activities And Calibration of sprayers  (co-ordinated by ENAMA);
provide a shared regulatory basis, which allows the drawing up of 'Test reports' and the issuing of 'Certificates' on inspected machines, with standard procedures to ensure recognition at national and European level.

On the technical side, during the period 1999-2005, the Apulia Region promoted and financed - among other activities - the purchase of test benches for the control and calibration of irrigation machines operating on herbaceous crops, the design and construction of special computerized test benches for the calibration of machines used in viticulture as well as a feasibility study of a test bench for the control and calibration of the irrigation machinery operating in olive cultivation and, generally, large foliage fruit farm.
The transposition of the new Community Directive on the entire phytosanitary management process, which is being discussed at the European Parliament, opens a new set of issues, wich will be discussed in a specific conference to identify the necessary supply chain services.
